Firstly, believe it or not, we’re mainly made up of Sheffield Steelers fans, some of us young some of us old, some of us fans since the beginning, some of us recent, some season ticket holders, some not. Some of our bunch are even fans of the enemy. Regardless. We don’t have time for the bickering and arguing that goes on, it’s petty and stupid. Steelers fans? Panthers fans? Whatever, we’re all hockey fans.
We started our team, because we simply don’t care (about much!). We just love playing hockey and want to have fun. We’ve had Steelers down to train with us during the off season, we’ve had elite league referees, we’ve made friends, we’ve lost friends. In the end, we’ve got a great bunch of people that enjoy what we have, on and off the ice.
The Squeelers were formed in April 2008 by a break-away group from the Sheffield Stix, those who moved felt they had gone as far as they could with the Stix and found themselves wanting a little bit more from their hockey hobby.
Through hard work and stressful times regular ice time was secured enabling players to be recruited. It has not been an easy task establishing the Squeelers but we’re getting there!
The Squeelers play out of Ice Sheffield and train on Friday evenings at 22:00-23:30 on PAD 1.
We’ve effectively closed the books on new players for now (April 2012); this is due to the Squeelers becoming EIHA Registered. Being a registered recreational team makes it a little harder to allow unregistered players to drop in and out as this affects our insurance. In some cases we allow three trial sessions, after which a decision will be made by the committee on what happens from there. Registration fees* are to be paid and a completed registration form is to be signed before ever stepping on the ice. Our sessions are priced at £10.
The Squeelers, are looking forward meeting new people, playing in games and tournaments and travelling the country and beyond?
* Registration fees for 2011-2012 are £45
